The third meeting of the “International Follow-up Committee” on Libya

Minister Di Maio today attended the closing session of a meeting at senior official level (SOM) of the “International Follow-up Committee on Libya” (IFCL), an international working group dedicated to the Libyan crisis and born with the Berlin Conference in January. The video-teleconference meeting – led by the Director-General for Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Cardi, and Stephanie Williams, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative pro tempore for Libya – saw the participation of the countries and international organizations most directly involved in the Libyan dossier, for a total of 18 delegations. The meeting allowed an exchange of assessments on the latest political and military updates in Libya and on possible lines of action for the international community in support of intra-Libyan dialogue and the UNSMIL Mission.

The aim of the Italian initiative is reaffirming the current centrality of the IFCL as a forum for political and diplomatic dialogue on Libya and Rome’s intention to continue to play – even in the current pandemic – a central and proactive role in the Libyan dossier, at a time when hostilities have reached a new, violent intensity that does not spare civilians and the country’s infrastructure.
