Tunisia: Sereni, interview with Under-Secretary Ennaifer on Libya, immigration, and bilateral relations

Vice Minister Marina Sereni had today a telephone conversation with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tunisia, Selma Ennaifer.
After recalling the excellent state of relations between the two countries, the Vice Minister, together with her Tunisian colleague, analysed the situation of their respective countries in the light of the Covid-19 pandemic. They also focused on the need to cooperate bilaterally, to counter the health emergency and the economic and social crisis caused by the virus, particularly in some crucial sectors for both countries such as tourism.   
Sereni highlighted our Government’s concern about the rekindling of hostilities in Libya in recent weeks. The Vice Minister reiterated that for Italy there is no military solution in that country and the necessity to restart with the immediate stop to the fighting, a ceasefire and political dialogue as foreseen by the conclusions of the Berlin Conference. In this context, stressed Sereni, the naval mission decided by the EU Irini, led by Italy, will be a vital instrument to ensure, with impartiality and balance, any violation of the arms embargo. The Vice Minister then recalled how essential it is that the appointment of the new UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya is made as soon as possible.
Finally, Sereni and Ennaifer discussed cooperation in the migration issue, underlining their mutual willingness to continue their fruitful cooperation in the fight against human trafficking.
