Today, at the Foreign Ministry, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, chaired the meeting of the National Council for Development Cooperation, the main advisory body of the Italian development cooperation system, which was also attended by the Deputy Minister Emanuela Del Re and representatives of the Italian Parliament.
During his speech Minister Di Maio stressed that development cooperation is a strategic and necessary tool for Italy’s foreign policy, in order to effectively respond to the key global challenges of our times. Some of these challenges, such as climate change or Covid-19, are very complex indeed and require a cohesive mobilisation of the international community.
Italy has followed precisely this strategy in its struggle against the Covid crisis, Minister Di Maio emphasised, remembering how he was personally committed, from the outset, to ensuring that the Italian Government played a leading role in developing a multilateral response to the challenges arising from the pandemic, starting with the development of an effective and affordable vaccine in all countries.
Finally, the head of the Foreign Ministry stressed the important role played by the National Council for Development Cooperation, which establishes links with all public and private, profit and non-profit, entities that contribute, with their different roles and ranges of skills, with passion and commitment, to the success of development aid projects.
