Today Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio had a telephone conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe, to whom he expressed sincere condolences and the greatest solidarity for the violent explosion that hit Beirut last Tuesday. “We are ready to respond to the most urgent need and to provide the necessary assistance” the Minister affirmed, recalling the two Italian flights landed in Beirut in the last hours with a team of rescuers specialised in this kind of emergency and with 8.5 tonnes of medical supplies, in addition to the assistance already provided by the Italian contingency engaged in UNIFIL.
Mr Di Maio reiterated Italian support to Lebanon unity and stability, hoping that Lebanese political forces could unite their efforts to respond to the emergency and to the other challenges the country is facing. “Italy – he affirmed – will continue to support Lebanon, also through its engagement in UNIFIL”.
Minister Wehbe deeply thanked Italy for the solidarity shown and for its role within the framework of UNIFIL also in this emergency, hoping the bilateral cooperation could be further strengthened.
