Minister Luigi Di Maio meets with the UN Special Envoy for Libya, Ján Kubiš

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi di Maio, received the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Libya, Ján Kubiš.

The Minister reiterated his full support for UNSMIL and the Special Envoy and expressed his strong appreciation for the results achieved by the appointment of a new unified executive authority, hoping for a consolidation of this progress starting with the vote of confidence that the House of Representatives is called to express on the Government of National Unity.

The installation of a fully empowered and unified Government is essential to ensure the success of the elections to be held at the end of the year, to initiate a process of national reconciliation and to mitigate the economic and social effects of the crisis.

Minister Di Maio emphasised the importance of a full and concrete implementation of the ceasefire agreement, also in view of the hoped-for deployment of a UN ceasefire monitoring mechanism. Lastly, Minister Di Maio also stressed the need for an immediate end to any violations of the UN arms embargo, to which the Italian-led IRINI operation is contributing with impartiality.
