Meeting between Minister Di Maio and Stephanie Williams, the Special Adviser on Libya to the Secretary-General of the United Nations

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, had a cordial meeting this morning with Stephanie Williams, the Special Adviser on Libya to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Their discussion focused on their shared views on the political situation in Libya and Italy’s full support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The two also discussed the work carried out by Ms Williams, especially her commitment to the sustainabilty of the electoral process.

Referring to the widespread consensus in the international community on a Libyan-led transition, Minister Di Maio recalled the need to respect Libyan citizens’ expectations of stability and democracy. The Minister expressed his hope that, thanks not least to the UN’s mediation, the key Libyan actors could soon converge upon a credible political and electoral agenda that breaks down divisions and paves the way for elections to be held soon on a sound and agreed footing. The priority, underscored Di Maio, is to avert the danger of a prolonged political stalemate in which the prospects for a lasting stabilisation of the country receded even further.
