Italy has taken careful note of the statements in which the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Fayez Al Serraj, announced his intention to leave office by the end of October, giving way to the new executive that should result from the negotiations within the Libyan Political Dialogue under UN auspices. This is a decision of great responsibility at a critical stage in Libya’s history. With full respect for the sovereignty and will of the Libyan people, we hope that all parties will responsibly support the path of dialogue towards an agreed solution to the crisis at the heart of the Berlin Process.
Italy warmly welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2542 renewing the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and strongly supports the efforts of the UN Mission in Libya to relaunch the process of intra-Libyan political dialogue. We hope that all members of the international community will join in good faith in support of this process by refraining from interfering in Libya’s internal affairs in full compliance with international law, starting with the arms embargo.
