Nota Farnesina – Agreement for a permanent ceasefire in Libya

Italy warmly welcomed the signing of a permanent ceasefire agreement, today in Geneva, between Libyan military representatives in the Joint Military Commission (JMC 5+5), which has met during the past week under the leadership of the United Nations and UNSMIL.

The agreement for a permanent and lasting ceasefire, accompanied by important security measures, starting with the restoration of internal air and land routes and the implementation of confidence building measures, is a development of the utmost importance for the stability of Libya.

Italy – which has always worked resolutely towards this goal – encourages all Libyan parties to implement effectively the signed agreements, continuing to demonstrate maturity in the country’s best interests.

Italy hopes that further developments will be reflected in the intra-Libyan political dialogue, which – in the occasion of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum – will experience in the coming weeks a potentially decisive step towards a political solution to the Libyan crisis. In this regard, Italy confirms its active and convinced support for the delicate process promoted by UNSMIL.
