Vice Minister Emanuela Del Re took part in a High Level video conference meeting of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The main role of the DAC is to quantitatively and qualitatively promote development cooperation by shaping good practices, exchanging experiences, promoting synergies, stimulating innovation and adequate donor responses to major development challenges.
“Covid-19 has had an impact in terms of reducing the volume of official development assistance (ODA) and worsening human development, especially in the least developed nations.” – the Vice Minister began in her speech – “In this situation, improving aid effectiveness is not just an option: it’s a necessity”.
“Italy promotes a modern narrative based also on dialogue as a method for maximising efforts and the contribution of a plurality of actors, with a shared aspiration towards sustainable development goals. To this end, a stronger and more qualified involvement of civil society organisations could make a crucial contribution” – she continued.
Ms. Del Re then cited the diasporas, “key civil society players, whose involvement, like that of the private sector, is part of the Italian Cooperation strategy and is at the heart of the implementation of our Development Effectiveness Plan for 2020-2022”.
“As the next G20 Presidency, Italy is aware of its role in leading the multilateral effort to shape a better global society. The Italian agenda will focus on three concepts: People, Planet and Prosperity. This means taking care of people and the planet according to a holistic approach.” – Ms. Del Re concluded – “We want to pursue prosperity through a better distribution of opportunities for all, addressing inequality, including gender inequality, by supporting precarious workers, small and medium enterprises and the most vulnerable areas of the world. Today, more than ever, multilateralism is the only viable platform for addressing the complex challenges ahead.
