Italy is carefully monitoring the tensions in the El Guerguerat buffer zone in Western Sahara and urges all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid the use of force, in full compliance with the ceasefire agreements in force since 1991.
This situation highlights the urgency of a prompt appointment of the new Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara.
Italy hopes that, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2548, all parties involved will commit themselves, without preconditions and in good faith, to resume negotiations to achieve a political solution.
