The Libyan delegates attending the meeting of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), in Tunis, have taken some important decisions. The definition of a roadmap “for the preliminary phase of a comprehensive solution” to the Libyan crisis and the creation of a new executive authority, representing all the regions of the Country and charged with organizing the Parliamentary and Presidential elections to be held on December 24, 2021, constitute a positive development. However, the road to a successful transition in Libya remains long and challenging, beginning with the next virtual meeting of the LPDF scheduled for November 23.
The political developments achieved by the LPDF must now be accompanied and supported by similar advances in the field of security, consistently with the progress already made in recent weeks by the Joint Military Commission.
In view of these new goals, Italy confirms its full and convinced support for the intra-Libyan dialogue promoted by the UNSMIL, and hopes that all representatives of the Libyan people may act with courage and foresight, in the sole and exclusive interest of their nation.
The international community remains obliged to respect and protect the space for dialogue that the Libyans have managed to create in this potentially crucial phase for their country.
Finally, Italy congratulates the UNSMIL and Stephanie Williams, Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, for the leadership in promoting and directing the work of the LPDF.
