Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, has received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia, Othman Jerandi, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Minister Di Maio has reaffirmed his intention to further strengthen political and economic ties with Tunisia, Italy’s strategic partner in the region.
Minister Di Maio has emphasised that Tunisia’s stability is essential for the equilibrium of the entire Euro-Mediterranean region and has assured Italy’s full support for the reforms that the Tunisian authorities will undertake. With the international community’s contribution, such reforms will ensure prospects for stability and prosperity in the country.
To confirm Italy’s special attention to the North African country, Minister Di Maio has invited Minister Jerandi to attend the G20 meeting of Foreign Ministers in Matera on 29 June.
Minister Di Maio has also highlighted Italy’s commitment at the European level within the EU’s new approach to the Southern Neighbourhood. He has recalled, in particular, the importance of the economic and investment plan.
Minister Di Maio has reiterated the importance of bilateral cooperation to manage migration flows. He has expressed appreciation for the Tunisian authorities’ efforts in the fight against illegal immigration and the positive developments in the field of readmissions. Italy and Tunisia must continue to cooperate with flexibility and promptness.
The Ministers have also reviewed some of the main issues of regional interest, namely Libya and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
