Foreign Ministry Note – Libya

Italy welcomes with great satisfaction the outcome of the vote of the House of Representatives’ plenary session, which convened in Sirte starting from March 8th, granting confidence to the Government of National Unity led by Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dabaiba today March 10th.

It is an important and encouraging result within the Country’s normalization process, leading the way to an effective institutional transition in favour of the unity of Libya. After a decade of conflict, Libyans have shown their great will and determination to overcome differences through dialogue. The large majority the Libyan Parliament granted confidence to the Government of National Unity is further evidence of this renewed sense of unity.

Achieving these objectives seemed difficult until a few months ago and for this reason Italy thanks and reiterates its sincere appreciation for the unremitting efforts of the United Nations and the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General Jan Kubis for peace and stability in Libya.

Based on our Countries deep and historical ties and friendship, Italy remains alongside the Libyan people. Within the framework of the path set by the Berlin Process, Italy is ready to cooperate with the interim unified executive authority to support it during next phases of the institutional transition as well as in the pursuit of priority objectives such as holding elections on December 24th  and the concrete implementation of the ceasefire agreement, starting with the complete withdrawal from the Country of all foreign fighters and mercenaries, the launch of a national reconciliation process and the furniture of supply services to the Libyan population.
