Yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, met the Minister for the Malian Diaspora and African Integration, Al Hamdou Ag Ilène.
Their discussion was centred on collaboration on migration and security matters, which were the subject of a joint declaration signed by both Ministers. The Declaration is situated within the context of strengthening bilateral collaboration to combat migrant smuggling. It also makes a commitment to assist the Malian authorities to improve the management of illegal migratory flows, by promoting specific information campaigns, providing assistance and protection services in Mali for migrants in need, and by developing economic reintegration opportunities for Malian citizens of the regions affected.
In relation to the internal political situation in Mali, Minister Di Maio expressed his hope for a relaunch of the Algiers peace process. He then thanked his Malian counterpart for the approval granted to the new Ambassador of Italy in Bamako, which will soon become operational.
At the end of the meeting, both ministers attended the signing of the peace agreement between the communities of northern Mali.
