Support for Italian citizens following the suspension of air traffic from a number of African countries

Air traffic from South African countries has been suspended to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant.  This Foreign Ministry acted immediately, via the Unità di Crisi [the Crisis Unit] to assist our compatriots abroad. More than 200 Italians have been able to book scheduled flights where these are still available, and are currently returning to Italy. Some other African countries, such as Morocco, have autonomously decided to block flights. To enable Italians to leave Morocco we have organised 6 special flights from Casablanca and Rabat, from 4 to 14 December, and two special ferry crossings from Tangier to Genoa. These travel corridors will become fully operational as soon as we obtain authorisation from the Moroccan authorities. The Crisis Unit is also monitoring the spread of Omicron in other areas of the world, and will intervene wherever there is a need to support our fellow-Italians.
