Italy welcomes UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ appointment of Stephanie Williams as his Special Adviser on Libya.
The UN plays a crucial role in support of the ongoing Libyan-owned and Libyan-led political process. At this critical juncture, both Libya and the International Community will undoubtedly benefit from Stephanie Williams’ vision, experience and previous accomplishments.
The UN Mission can provide a crucial contribution accompanying the country to free, fair, and simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as outlined in UNSC resolutions 2570 and 2571, and in the Tunis Roadmap, including by leveraging the tools provided by the Berlin Process and supporting inclusive political, security, economic and humanitarian dialogue tracks.
Stephanie Williams’ appointment will strengthen the capacity of the UN Mission to effectively assist the Libyan institutions on the ground, to ensure that the people of Libya can choose their representatives free of any hindrance.
Italy urges all Libyan stakeholders to cooperate fully and in good faith with the new UN Special Adviser, and invites all international partners – including members of the UN Security Council and of the Berlin Process – to provide Stephanie Williams their full support.
