Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio held a telephone conversation with NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, within the framework of the consultations that he is carrying out this week with Italy’s major European and international partners. The conversations focused on Italy’s contribution to the Atlantic Alliance and the latest developments in the tensions on the border between Ukraine and Russia.
In referring to Italy’s ongoing top-level contacts with the parties and Allies, Minister Di Maio highlighted the need for NATO to remain firm on principles and values while continuing to actively pursue a dialogue with Moscow and reinforcing the coordination with the European Union. Within this context, he expressed appreciation for the political cohesion that the Alliance is showing, underscoring that NATO must maintain an effective posture of deterrence and defence while at the same time avoiding to adopt measures liable to heightening tensions. In this respect, Minister Di Maio emphasized the significant contribution that Italy assures within the Alliance.
