Telephone conversation between Minister Di Maio and the Secretary General of the United Nations

Last evening, Minister Di Maio had a cordial telephone conversation with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, focused on the Ukrainian crisis and on reaffirming the pivotal points in Italy’s stand.

The minister assured Italy’s full support for UN initiatives and actions, especially humanitarian efforts, stressing the priority need of a truce to enable the evacuation of civilians and open humanitarian corridors, and also to implement the call cohesively launched by the International Community pursuant to the Resolution passed by the UN General Assembly on the 2nd of March with 141 votes in favour, 5 votes against and 35 abstentions.

The Italian Foreign Minister and the UN Secretary General also discussed the margin for mediation that the United Nations and other players can offer to contribute to rapidly solve the conflict.

Lastly, Minister Di Maio recalled Italy’s expectations that the United Nations, and particularly the WFP, fully collaborate with the Italian judiciary to solve the case of Luca Attanasio, the Italian ambassador killed in DR Congo along with the Carabiniere Iacovacci and their driver Milambo. Secretary General Guterres assured that he will give the case his personal consideration.
