The Farnesina intensifies its interventions in favour of Ukrainian refugees and its support to Moldova

As a follow-up to the joint statement of Minister Di Maio and his Moldovan counterpart Popescu on strengthening cooperation in the field of migration, signed on 15 March 2022, the Farnesina has intensified its interventions in support of Ukrainian refugees in the Country and in favour of Moldovan institutions. Italy is thus responding to the call made by local authorities, who are engaged in facing an unprecedented challenge in the history of the Country. Thanks to the Migration Fund, two projects have been launched with the United Nations to assist Moldova in coping with the flow of refugees from Ukraine. These projects are in addition to another project for EUR 10 million with UNHCR, announced by Minister Di Maio during his visit to the Country on 15 March 2022.

The two projects, developed with IOM and UNICEF for additional EUR 10 million, will help implement initiatives to support the Moldovan authorities’ capacity to manage the migration crisis. The project developed with IOM aims to provide goods and assistance to Moldovan institutions in order to identify unaccompanied minors, fstreamline the processing of administrative paperwork, and strengthen local NGOs engaged in the protection of vulnerable groups. The initiative with UNICEF aims to improve access to education and essential services for minors and help support their families.
