Italy-Canada: Youth Mobility Agreement comes into effect

Today, 1 November 2022, the Italy-Canada Youth Mobility Agreement comes into effect, offering professional training opportunities to Italian and Canadian youths of between 18 and 35 years of age accessing the world of labour.

The Agreement was signed within the framework of the excellent bilateral relations between Italy and Canada which celebrate their 75th anniversary this year. It aims to foster deeper knowledge of their reciprocal cultures, societies, and languages among the new generations of Italians and Canadians through travel, working, and living experiences in the other Country.

The new Agreement replaces the Memorandum of Understanding on “Working-Holidays” signed between Italy and Canada in 2006, expanding its scope through Italy’s extension of work permits to 12 months and the inclusion of new categories of participants.

In particular, the new Agreement sets forth the following categories:

  1. a) “Working-Holidays” for those intending to travel to the host Country and to obtain temporary employment during their stay;
  2. b) “Young Professionals”, dedicated to those already in possession of an employment contract in the host Country, to support their professional development or that is pertinent to their previous specific field of study;
  3. c) “International Co-op”, addressed to students enrolled in a course at a post-secondary institution who have been awarded an internship in the host Country that is pertinent to their specific field of study and is a requirement to complete their studies.
