The Administrative Committee of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) today unanimously decided to proceed with the establishment of the Milan Section of the UPC’s Central Division.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tajani said: “This is a significant result for Italy. It is an absolutely unexpected result that confirms the central role played by Italy, Lombardy and Milan in the promotion and protection of innovation and intellectual property in Europe and worldwide”.
The Administrative Committee’s decision is the successful culmination of the long and complex diplomatic work jointly carried out by the Italian Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in close connection with the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry for Enterprise and Made in Italy, and in agreement with the Lombardy Region and the Municipality of Milan.
The Milan Section will judge patent litigation in crucial sectors for Europe and Italy such as pharmaceuticals, plant protection, agri-food and fashion.
The Government is already working to make the Milan Section fully operational within the timeframe envisaged by the Agreement (12 months under Art. 87.3).
