Today, at Palazzo Chigi, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani met the exiled Belarus opposition leader, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
During the discussion, the Deputy Prime Minister restated “Italy’s continuous commitment in supporting the legitimate democratic aspirations of the Belarusian people and condemning the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus” and expressed solidarity with Tikhanovskaya for her sentence to 15 years in jail.
Regarding the Russian aggression to Ukraine, Tajani expressed his concerns about the support offered by the Belarus Government to Moscow and, more specifically, for the announced deployment of Russian tactical nuclear warheads in Belarus. This action put the whole disarmament architecture established in the Non-proliferation Treaty.
The Deputy Prime Minister reassured the Belarus opposition leader that Italy intends to maintain a firm attitude towards the Minsk Authorities, in tight coordination with the EU partners, while ensuring that the International Community will remain vigilant about the situation in Belarus.
