In the night between Friday 8 and Saturday 9 September, a violent earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck the Atlas region of Morocco.
The Embassy in Rabat and the Consulate General in Casablanca, together with the Crisis Unit and the Honorary Consulate in Marrakech, immediately took action to provide assistance, in close contact with the Moroccan authorities, to Italian nationals present in the area affected by the earthquake.
The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, was kept constantly updated on developments in the situation from the very first moments. “I invite Italians currently present in the country and not in possession of a plane ticket to avoid going to Marrakech airport, given the congestion of the airport, where a cell of the Honorary Consulate of Marrakech is in any case operational and can be reached at +21 2666342080. For those who need to return to Italy immediately, I suggest also checking the flights departing from Rabat and Casablanca Airports, which are operating regularly.”
Reiterating the Italian government’s closeness to the Moroccan people affected by the earthquake, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister confirmed the availability of the Italian Civil Protection, in liaison with the European Union Civil Protection, to provide all possible support to the Moroccan authorities, if requested.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to closely monitor the evolution of the situation and urges fellow citizens in the country to report any emergencies or difficulties to the Embassy in Rabat (Tel.: +21 2537219730, Mobile +212661221324), the Consulate General in Casablanca (Tel.: +21 2522437070, Mobile +212661217332) and the Crisis Unit of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Tel.: +39 0636225).
