Italy’s Undersecretary of State to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Maria Tripodi held a videoconference meeting with UK Minister of State for Trade Policy Greg Hands.
The meeting focused on bilateral trade relations, the WTO reform and the Italian-led G7 priorities on multilateral trade issues.
As underlined by the Undersecretary, the United Kingdom – the sixth largest destination market for Italian exports – has deep trade ties with Italy (recently consolidated with the signing in February 2023 of a Memorandum for the promotion of exports and investments) which the Italian government wishes to consolidate in innovative sectors: “green” economy, advanced technologies, life sciences, start-ups and digital.
Tripodi also pointed out that the Italian G7 Presidency aims to strengthen an international trade system with the WTO at its centre, “the best solution to guarantee global growth and development”. Italy will pay close attention to the environmental challenge and to economic security, while also aiming at coordination with the Brazilian G20 Presidency in order not to give up the fundamental dialogue with the South of the world, Tripodi concluded.
