Minister Antonio Tajani’s meeting with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson

Today, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, met with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, at the Farnesina.

Friendship with the United States of America and the transatlantic relationship represent, together with Europe, the pillars of our Government’s foreign policy,” stated the Deputy Prime Minister, highlighting the particularly intense and positive phase of relations between Italy and the US, both politically and economically.

Tajani and Johnson addressed the main current international issues. With reference to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated his “firm multidimensional support for Kyiv and the need to maintain pressure on Moscow for a just peace based on international law“. Concerning the crisis in the Middle East, he expressed the “Italian government’s full support for the US mediation efforts, both in Gaza and in Lebanon”, emphasising the importance of coordination with the Allies and regional players.

The Red Sea issue, the migration issue, Indo-Pacific stability and dialogue with China, and the consolidation of peace and growth in African countries were also at the core of the meeting.

In conclusion, Tajani expressed his “gratitude for the crucial support of the United States to ensure the success of the Italian G7 presidency” and hoped for a further strengthening of the group as “a coordination mechanism of the major liberal democracies and a stability factor in responding to global crises”.
