Tomorrow, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, will preside over the handover ceremony of the first of 15 trucks donated by Italy to the World Food Programme (WFP) as part of the “Food for Gaza” initiative, at the Port of Genoa. The event will be attended by WFP Deputy Executive Director, Rania Dagash, who will receive the donation on behalf of the organisation.
“Italy is at the forefront of ensuring the delivery of aid to the civilian population in Gaza, and during the G7 Development Ministers’ Meeting in Pescara, I announced further financial contributions from our Cooperation,” stated Minister Tajani. “With this initiative, we want to reaffirm the Italian Government’s commitment to the humanitarian emergency in the Strip: we are working to ensure that aid reaches those in need as soon as possible,” continued the Deputy Prime Minister. “These special vehicles are designed precisely for this purpose: to make the WFP’s delivery operations to beneficiaries even more efficient,” Tajani concluded.
Since 7 October 2023, the Italian Government has allocated a series of aid packages totalling EUR 70 million. Within this framework, EUR 30 million has so far been earmarked for the “Food for Gaza” initiative, launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tajani on 11 March to provide concrete assistance for food security and the health of Palestinian civilians.
