The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare, and the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, have signed today a new agreement concerning a financial contribution for the purpose of improvements to the premises of the United Nations Global Logistics Service Centre (UNGSC) headquarters in Brindisi.
The agreement provides for a strengthening and modernization of the UNGCS facility, 30 years after its construction, which Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, together with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, visited last June.
“I am particularly pleased with the agreement that was signed today given the key role of the UNGSC in addressing the many crises in Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” Minister Tajani has pointed out. “I have strongly supported the finalization of the understanding, given also the relevant benefits expected for the entire Brindisi area,” Tajani added.
In addition to the improvements planned for the UNGCS, in fact, the Italian government has foreseen a further strengthening of Brindi’s international vocation in the budget law of 2023, particularly through new allocations to the local European School of Brindisi. The additional resources will be devoted to increasing the local educational offer, in particular the hiring of native English-speaking or experienced teaching and administrative staff.
In recalling the importance of the UN Hub in Brindisi, including for the delivery of humanitarian aid through the “Food for Gaza” initiative, launched by Minister Tajani, Ambassador Massari stressed that “new targeted infrastructure investments will enable the Service Center to respond even more quickly and effectively to international emergencies by actively contributing to vital UN operations”.
