Foreign Affairs Council discussion on Georgia

During the Foreign Affairs Council discussion on the situation in Georgia, Italy – in reiterating its strongest condemnation of all acts of violence occurred in the country in recent weeks – expressed support for the measures proposed by HR/VP Kallas, including the sanctions proposals (which were blocked due to a lack of consensus on the part of other member states).

Italy also supported the proposal to suspend the agreement for the facilitation of diplomatic visas, a proposal that was then approved.

Finally, Italy reiterated that the European Union must stand by the Georgian people and hoped that the most recent decisions taken in Tbilisi, which ended up de facto suspending the path towards the EU, could be reviewed.
