Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, will be in Germany today and tomorrow for the 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC).
Today, Tajani will attend a meeting of the Quintet (Italy, France, Germany, United States, United Kingdom) with Arab Partners (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, United Arab Emirates) and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. The meeting will focus on the situation in Gaza. “It is essential to strengthen dialogue to consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza and begin working on reconstruction to offer a future of peace and hope to the entire region,” Tajani stated, emphasising Italy’s continued commitment to supporting the civilian population. “Just yesterday, we welcomed a group of Palestinian children with cancer, whom we evacuated from Gaza, and they will receive treatment in Italian hospitals. We must do more, together, to intensify humanitarian efforts and assist those in need,” Tajani added.
On Saturday, the Minister will co-chair a roundtable on innovative methods to combat irregular migration and organised crime in this sector, alongside the UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, David Lammy. Tajani will also attend an informal meeting of G7 Foreign Ministers, the first under the Canadian Presidency and the first with the new US Secretary of State, Rubio.
In the afternoon, there will be a meeting of the Quintet and the European Union, which will review the state of transatlantic relations, including crisis scenarios and priorities under the new US Administration. Following this, a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Poland, with the EU High Representative and the US Special Envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Gen. Keith Kellogg, will focus on the prospects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. “The fact that the United States and the Russian Federation have resumed high-level talks is a positive sign. We Europeans must be united and work to bring peace back to our continent. Not a temporary peace, but a just, lasting peace that does not equate to a surrender of Kyiv,” Tajani added.
On the sidelines of the Conference, Minister Tajani will also hold bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Argentina, Gerardo Werthein, Saudi Arabia, Faisal bin Fahran Al Saud, Canada, Mélanie Joly, as well as with the Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Jim Risch, and with the US Special Envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Gen. Keith Kellogg.
