Meeting between Minister Tajani and Cypriot Foreign Minister

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, had a cordial meeting today at the Farnesina with the Cypriot Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos.

The two ministers discussed ways to strengthen the excellent bilateral relations and how to jointly address the main challenges in the Mediterranean. Starting with the situation in the Middle East, the meeting saw full convergence on the importance of promoting regional stability, particularly the reconstruction of Gaza and Syria. Minister Tajani emphasised the need for the restoration of the ceasefire in Gaza, reaffirming Italy’s support for the Arab plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. The Cypriot Minister expressed his appreciation for the Italian initiative “Food for Gaza”, with which the Cypriot government had previously facilitated certain operations.

The two ministers then focused on issues related to boosting competitiveness and strengthening European security and strategic autonomy, also in the context of Cyprus’s future EU Presidency. In this regard, both ministers agreed on the priority of accelerating the European integration of the Western Balkans and revitalising EU action in the southern neighbourhood. Focusing on migration, the meeting highlighted a shared willingness to work together to find innovative solutions and promote the orderly management of external borders.
