Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani is in Algiers today for a series of institutional meetings with the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, and the Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab.

The mission is part of Italy’s growth diplomacy strategy, featuring the organisation of an Italy-Algeria Business Roundtable dedicated to exploring economic cooperation prospects between the two countries. The event will bring together Italian and Algerian companies operating in energy, infrastructure, transport, defence, and space, alongside representatives from ITA, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, SIMEST, and SACE.

Algeria is a key partner for Italy’s and Europe’s energy security, particularly in the current delicate international context. Thanks to the Eni-Sonatrach agreement signed in April 2022, Algiers has become Italy’s leading supplier of natural gas, covering 39% of Italian imports.

The mission also provides an opportunity to enhance cooperation in renewable energy and the green transition, particularly through the development of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SoutH2Corridor) and other potential interconnections in the physical and digital infrastructure sectors.

Moreover, Italy and Algeria share a strong alignment in addressing major regional crises, from Libya to the Sahel, and hold a common vision regarding development policies across the African continent. Algeria is also among the partner countries of the Mattei Plan, with projects focused on the agriculture sector and vocational training.
