Earthquake in Myanmar: Italian Development Cooperation approves emergency aid

In response to the severe consequences of the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on 28 March, Italy has swiftly mobilised its expertise to provide concrete initial support to the affected populations in this critical moment.

Deputy Minister Cirielli has approved an emergency contribution of €2 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). This funding, promptly allocated through Italian Development Cooperation, will be used to provide immediate aid and assistance to the communities most affected by the earthquake. Additionally, an emergency call for proposals worth a further €1.3 million will soon be published. This initiative will focus on crisis response and involve numerous Italian Civil Society Organisations already active in the country, many of which have been providing rapid and effective assistance to victims since the earliest hours following the disaster.

At the same time, Italian Development Cooperation continues to coordinate with all relevant stakeholders, particularly the Civil Protection Department and the dedicated European Union Mechanism, to organise a humanitarian transport operation aimed at delivering essential goods to address urgent needs on the ground.

Beyond addressing the immediate emergency, Italy is committed to coordinating a range of interventions to support the affected communities in the long term.
