Undersecretary of State Giorgio Silli carried out a mission to Barbados and Saint Kitts and Nevis for a series of institutional meetings with representatives of the governments of the two Caribbean states, in preparation for two important international events scheduled for next autumn: the 12th Italy–Latin America and Caribbean Conference in Rome and the 4th EU–CELAC Summit in Colombia.
During his meetings in Barbados with the Minister of Finance, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President of the Caribbean Development Bank, and with members of the local Italian community, Silli highlighted the importance of their contribution to the life of the country that has welcomed them, and reiterated the closeness and support of the Italian Government.
In Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Undersecretary was received by the Prime Minister, the Governor-General, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This marked the first official visit by a representative of the Italian Government to the country since 2007 – a significant opportunity to revitalise bilateral political dialogue and to demonstrate Italy’s genuine commitment to the relationship.
In all meetings, the Undersecretary expressed Italy’s strong interest in the Caribbean region and its willingness to deepen economic partnerships, including through international financial institutions. Silli also raised the need to continue judicial cooperation efforts against organised crime and to strengthen, through Italy’s support, the dialogue between the European Union and the Caribbean, particularly in view of the upcoming international engagements.
