The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held a telephone conversation today with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi.
Tajani and Grossi first exchanged views on the progress of the ongoing discussions between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s support for the work of the negotiators and the parties involved, and underlined the crucial role of the IAEA in the process, which is essential to ensuring the impartiality of verification mechanisms for any potential agreement.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, the Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated the importance of the Agency maintaining its presence in the country, particularly in view of a possible agreement on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Director Grossi will be in Milan on 21 and 22 May to take part in the event “Technologies and nuclear applications for a sustainable future”, organised by the Lombardy Region in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), focusing on the topic of the energy transition. The event aims to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of expertise in the energy sector. Italy is showing increasing interest in the role of civil nuclear applications as a driver for sustainable development. In this context, Italy stands ready to deepen its cooperation with the IAEA, both from a technical-scientific perspective and in promoting disarmament and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
