A meeting is underway at the Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Unit between Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and the Italian Ambassadors to the countries affected by the military clashes between Iran and Israel.
First of all, an assessment has been made of the situation of Italian citizens present in Israel and Iran: using land border crossings and waiting for airports to open, the Italian Embassies and Consulates are assisting compatriots who want to leave the two countries.
Among the topics discussed, there are also those relating to the economic aspects of the conflict. The main fear is a military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 30% of the oil transported globally – 20 million barrels per day – passes.
Another fear is that an escalation of the conflict could involve Iran’s neighbouring Gulf States, potential targets of military action.
