Fighting crime in the spirit of Falcone and Borsellino. Undersecretaries Silli and Tripodi take part in the international meeting “The challenges of transnational crime” in Palermo

Undersecretaries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giorgio Silli and Maria Tripodi, are participating in the fourth session of a programme of study and coordination between European and Latin American prosecutors. The initiative is promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the National Anti-Mafia and Counter-Terrorism Directorate, through the bilateral programmes Falcone Borsellino and ITAJUS, as well as the European programmes EL PAcCTO 2.0 and COPOLAD 3, implemented by the Italo-Latin American International Organisation (IILA), and held in Palermo on 18–19 July.

Over thirty years after the Capaci and Via D’Amelio massacres, the working methods of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino remain a vital point of reference for all magistrates committed to fighting organised crime. This is despite the evolving strategies, rhetoric, and organisational models of criminal networks, which today represent a global threat to security, democracy, and fundamental freedoms.

The first day of the event will be opened by Undersecretary Giorgio Silli on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Undersecretary Maria Tripodi will take part on 19 July and present a lifetime achievement award to Argentine judge Carlos Mahiques.

In line with previous meetings, this event will bring together over 100 magistrates and officials from 13 countries across Europe, Latin America, and the Balkans, fostering dialogue and cooperation essential to tackling transnational organised crime and its associated large-scale illicit wealth accumulation and systemic corruption.

This process has already contributed to strengthening a practice of cooperation based on three strategic pillars: deepening knowledge of mafia operational models in different regional contexts; analysing the connections between transnational criminal organisations; and sharing innovative tools and practices to reinforce international judicial cooperation.
