Tajani met with Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld. Agreement signed on immigration thanks to the “flow decree”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, met today with the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld.

Following the inclusion of Ecuador in the Flow Decree for the three-year period 2026-2028, during the meeting the two Ministers signed an agreement on immigration and mobility that aims to facilitate the regular mobility of workers, students and trainees and to combat irregular immigration and human trafficking. It is the first agreement of its kind with a Latin American country.

Minister Tajani also expressed his full willingness to expand technical assistance programs in the legal field – including the prison management sector – and to evaluate any new proposals for development cooperation initiatives.

Ecuador is a partner of growing importance: while underlining the priority nature of Latin America for Italian foreign policy, Minister Tajani reaffirmed the Government’s intention to strengthen bilateral cooperation in all sectors, starting with economic and commercial collaboration. As part of the export policy that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs pursues, Minister Tajani agreed with Minister Sommerfeld to hold a business forum as soon as possible with companies interested in the Ecuadorian market.

The Minister also confirmed Italy’s desire to increasingly become the voice of Latin America in Brussels and in European capitals, while seizing the many opportunities offered by the EU Global Gateway. Minister Tajani seized the opportunity to invite Minister Sommerfeld to the Italy-Latin America Conference, which will be hosted in Rome in the coming months.
