Italy and other international partners of the “Media Freedom Coalition” appeal for the granting of foreign media access to Gaza

Italy, together with 26 other countries that are members of the “Media Freedom Coalition”, has signed an appeal to the Government of Israel, urging it to grant immediate access to Gaza for journalists and media outlets, while calling on all parties to the conflict to make every effort to ensure the safety of journalists and media workers.

Recently, Minister of Foreign Affairs Tajani had condemned the attacks on journalists in Gaza, describing them as unacceptable. These attacks are a reflection of the level of violence reached by the conflict and highlight the urgency of ending the killing of innocent victims. The role of the media is crucial in shedding light on the devastating reality of war, and it is therefore essential to ensure the safe access of the media to conflict zones.

Italy and its partners reiterate their condemnation of deliberate attacks and all forms of violence against journalists and media workers, reminding that international humanitarian law mandates the protection of those working to ensure freedom of information, even during times of conflict.

Furthermore, the call for a path to ensure lasting peace and security, and the realisation of a two-state solution, is renewed through a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The Media Freedom Coalition was established in 2019 and is a partnership that now brings together over 50 countries and international organisations working to support and defend press freedom and the safety of journalists and media workers.
