A new group of 26 Palestinian students benefiting from scholarships at Italian universities is arriving in Italy today under the “university corridors” initiative from Gaza, implemented through the IUPALS – Italian Universities for Palestinian Students – project. A further group of students is expected to leave the Strip for Italy at the beginning of next week.
The first group reached Jordan late on Wednesday evening, with assistance from the Consulate General in Jerusalem and the Embassy in Amman, following their exit from Israeli territory. In Amman, the students were accommodated at the Italian Hospital facilities before departing this morning for Rome on a commercial flight.
A wide range of Italian universities will host the Palestinian students, including the Universities of Bari, Brescia, Cagliari, Macerata, Molise, Naples “Federico II” and Parthenope, Parma, Roma Tre, and Venice – IUAV. In total, 41 universities participate in the IUPALS project through the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI).
Alongside the students, an additional 16 individuals travelling to reunite with their families in Italy are also arriving today. This brings the number of Palestinians received in Italy to date to approximately 1,350.
