The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giorgio Silli, carried out a mission to Costa Rica and Guatemala for bilateral political consultations. During the visit, he also held meetings with Italian businesses, members of the Italian communities residing in the two countries, and representatives of their respective civil societies.
In Costa Rica, the Undersecretary co-chaired, together with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lydia Peralta Cordero, the third edition of the Bilateral Political Dialogue, taking stock not only of the main regional and global issues, but also of the state of the ongoing negotiations at the United Nations on Security Council reform.
In Guatemala, following a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martínez, Silli inaugurated the first edition of the Bilateral Political Consultations Mechanism, which he co-chaired with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Luisa Ramírez Coronado. The establishment of the Mechanism also carried significant symbolic weight, reflected in the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ strong appreciation for the Italian Government’s determination to deepen the Italian–Guatemalan partnership.
Building on the excellent results of the 12th Italy–Latin America and Caribbean Conference held last October, the Undersecretary reaffirmed in both capitals Italy’s robust interest in a strategic region with which the Government is committed to further strengthening political dialogue and economic partnership, fully leveraging the potential of the Italian economic system to support our enterprises. Silli also emphasised the importance of enhancing judicial and police cooperation, including through legal diplomacy initiatives and with the essential support of the Italo-Latin American Institute. Lastly, the discussions highlighted significant opportunities for cooperation in the cultural field and in the preservation of historical and archaeological heritage. Taken together, these initiatives aim, among other objectives, to support both Central American countries in deepening their engagement with the European Union, with Italy acting as a privileged partner.
