The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, took part this morning in an extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, convened by videoconference by the EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, to review, together with the 27 Member States and the Ukrainian Minister, Andrii Sybiha, the initiative launched by the United States in Geneva to advance peace in Ukraine.
Minister Tajani reaffirmed the Government’s firm support for Ukraine and its people in the face of continued Russian strikes, which in recent hours have again targeted critical energy infrastructure ahead of the winter. He also updated his European counterparts on Italy’s latest deliveries to Ukraine, particularly in the energy sector.
He reiterated Italy’s commitment to a just and lasting peace and underlined the importance of sustained transatlantic dialogue, recalling the recent direct contacts between Prime Minister Meloni and President Trump, as well as yesterday’s Leaders-level meeting of the Coalition of the Willing.
The Minister stressed the need to define a security architecture capable of safeguarding the future of Ukraine and Europe, supported by robust and credible guarantees along the lines of those proposed by Italy.
The European Ministers agreed on the importance of maintaining strong pressure on Moscow in order to create the conditions for the start of negotiations. This meeting forms part of a broader network of engagements on the Ukrainian file, in which Italy remains at the forefront of efforts in support of peace.
