On the occasion of International Human Rights Day — which marks the adoption of the 1948 Universal Declaration — the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, reaffirmed that the promotion and protection of fundamental rights remain a non-negotiable pillar of Italy’s international engagement.
This year, the anniversary takes on particular significance following Italy’s recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term. This achievement represents concrete recognition of our country’s commitment to defending the dignity of every individual and of the Italian diplomatic tradition of dialogue and mediation.
Minister Tajani recalled that the mandate within the Council will inject new momentum into Italy’s long-standing priorities: the universal abolition of the death penalty, the promotion of gender equality, the protection of the rights of children and the most vulnerable, the defence of freedom of expression and religion, and the fight against all forms of discrimination.
On all of these fronts, the Italian Foreign Ministry will continue to work with determination alongside international partners to ensure that human dignity and fundamental rights are fully upheld — for everyone, everywhere in the world.
