Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani travelled to Strasbourg today where he met with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul and some Italian members of the European Parliament.

Minister Taiani discussed European issues with President Metsola, including the EU Multiannual Financial Framework currently under negotiation, European competitiveness through investment in innovative technologies, and the request made by Italy, along with other Member States, for urgent regulatory simplification, especially to strengthen industrial growth and the attractiveness of the European Single Market. Minister Tajani and President Metsola also discussed the EU enlargement process: Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s strong support through concrete initiatives aimed at simplifying and streamlining the accession negotiations, thus making them more effective. Following his mission to Libya, the Foreign Minister focused on immigration and Italy’s work, together with international partners, to counter irregular flows and promote legal immigration channels.

In his meetings with President Metsola and Minister Wadephul, Minister Tajani also discussed major crises and issues on the international agenda, including Greenland, Iran, Venezuela, Ukraine, and Gaza, in light of the United States’ call to involve several countries, including Italy, in the Board of Peace. These issues were also raised in the meeting with the Italian members of the European Parliament.

Minister Tajani reaffirmed the need to ensure the defence of the Arctic region within the NATO framework and to preserve transatlantic unity, confirming Italy’s willingness to act as a bridge between the two sides of the Alliance through constructive and proactive action within NATO, the EU, the G7, and other multilateral fora.

Minister Tajani also discussed bilateral collaboration and European issues with the German Minister, in view of Minister Wadephul’s mission to Italy on January 23 for the Italy-Germany Summit chaired by the two Heads of Government.
