European Day of the Righteous: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remembers the courage of its diplomats

On the European Day of the Righteous, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation remembers those who, in the exercise of their diplomatic and consular functions, put the values of humanity and justice before their own personal interests, often at the risk of their own lives.

6 March is an opportunity for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reflect on this legacy of courage. The Garden of the Righteous of the Farnesina, a symbolic space inaugurated in 2024 in front of the seat of the Ministry, honours members of the Italian diplomatic-consular network who have distinguished themselves through exceptional acts of self-sacrifice and protection of human dignity.

The Garden now honours 14 Righteous of the Farnesina — including Ambassador Luca Attanasio, who died on 22 February 2021 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — selected by a special Commission of diplomats, with the collaboration of the GARIWO Foundation and the Municipality of Rome.

This space is a place of inspiration and testimony for future generations, confirming Italy’s commitment to promoting human rights and international cooperation.
