Italian citizen Nessy Guerra, coming from Sanremo and mother of a three-year-old Italian-Egyptian girl, has been sentenced on appeal in Egypt in proceedings for alleged “adultery,” a criminal offence under Egyptian law. The ruling upholds the first-instance decision issued on February 19, following the complaint filed by her Italian-Egyptian former husband.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy of Italy in Cairo and the consular network in Cairo and Hurghada, has been closely following the case for several months, providing legal assistance and protection to the Italian national and her daughter, as well as various forms of financial, administrative, and personal support, in light of the repeated threats reported by Mrs. Guerra as coming from her former husband. Throughout the affair, Egyptian authorities refused to authorize the child’s departure from the country. The child is the subject of a legal custody dispute and her father had the judges impose a travel ban on the child.
The case has been repeatedly brought to the attention of the Egyptian authorities by the Ambassador of Italy to Cairo and by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani himself, who has discussed the matter directly with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, reaffirming the need to ensure full respect for the rights of the Italian national and her child.
