Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani met yesterday at the Farnesina German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul. The meeting confirmed the strength of the relationship between Italy and Germany, which is based on deep bonds of friendship and a strong convergence of views on the main European and international challenges. In the year marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the two Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to building a relationship for the future that is rooted in history and in centuries of exchanges between the two countries.
Germany is Italy’s largest market, with trade totalling around EUR 160 billion in 2025, and set to grow further in 2026.
The two Ministers reaffirmed their full and unequivocal support for Ukraine. Italy and Germany also agree on the need to strengthen the European response to hybrid threats and to devote greater attention to the external dimension of cybersecurity. In this regard, Tajani outlined the reform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which involved the establishment of a cyber centre to protect the diplomatic and consular network from such threats; the Ministers visited this centre together at the end of the meeting.
Similar attention has been paid to the Western Balkans, where ongoing tensions make it all the more important to keep the region’s European perspective open and credible. Finally, the discussion turned to the crises in the Middle East, from Iran to Gaza and on to Lebanon.
