On 5 September, the Italian Embassy in Bulgaria and the Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia presented the panel exhibition “Air, Water, Earth, Fire”, inaugurated by the Italian Ambassador in Sofia, Giuseppina Zarra. The project, curated by Antonello Migliozzi and Marco Marotta, benefits from the collaboration of the Museum Centre of Agricultural Sciences (MUSA) at the University of Naples Federico II, and its director, Prof. Stefano Mazzoleni.

The exhibition showcases the work of Italian artist Adriana Pignatelli Mangoni, inspired by the 18th- and 19th-century travellers who visited Italy as part of the so-called Grand Tour. The exchange of ideas in Europe between writers, scientists, and poets of the time contributed to the development of a shared sense of European values. This was because, upon returning home, those travellers would recount, write, and paint what they had seen in the lands of ancient Magna Graecia.

The project tells a story through images, tracing the path of active volcanoes from the Phlegraean Fields and Vesuvius to the largely underwater arc that includes Stromboli and Vulcano, ending with the complex of Mount Etna. The artworks offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the ancient painting technique gouache, widely used in 19th-century landscape paintings.

The exhibition, set up in the outdoor spaces of the Embassy, is open to the public free of charge until 20 December 2024.
