The Museum of Fine Arts of Alicante is strengthening its historical connection with Italian art through the exhibition “Milan, showcase of modernity”, curated by Nicoletta Colombo, Danka Giacon, and Serena Redaelli, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Madrid, the Italian Consulate General in Barcelona, the Italian Cultural Institute of Barcelona, the Generalitat Valenciana, and the Diputación de Alicante.
Inspired by the relationship that 19th-century artists from the MUBAG’s (Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina) permanent collection established with Italy—where they travelled on scholarships granted by the Provincial Council to enhance their training—the exhibition (open until 4 May) takes visitors on a journey through Italian art history from the early 20th century to the 1940s. It features 162 works from over 60 lenders and Italian institutions. A total of 41 artists are represented, reflecting the cultural vibrancy of Lombardy in the first decades of the last century. The exhibition showcases a remarkable collection of masterpieces with significant historical and artistic value, created by renowned Italian artists such as Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, Filippo De Pisis, Fortunato Depero, Achille Funi, Alberto Savinio, Mario Sironi, Mario Tozzi, Renato Guttuso, and others.
Enhancing the exhibition, rare period documents accompany the various sections, including posters, photographs, garments, textile designs, films, and magazines. These elements allow visitors to immerse themselves in the spirit of Italy at the time and appreciate the diverse aspects of Italian artistic creativity during this crucial period.
