Born from a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Theatre, and the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the performance “Opera, Amore – Metaopera in One Act” is a journey through the history of Italian melodrama and a tribute to the history of Italian opera.

The first event of the “Maggio Metropolitano” 2025, the show will debut on Sunday, 23 March, in Florence, at the Luca Giordano Hall in Palazzo Medici Riccardi, where the first two absolute performances will take place.

Opera, Amore” explores and tells over four centuries of the history of Italian melodrama. The traditional love triangle of opera (her, him, the other), in which the love between the first two characters is contrasted by the third, traverses the great masterpieces of opera from Monteverdi to Puccini, passing through Pergolesi, Mozart, Paisiello, Cimarosa, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni, and Giordano.

Opera, Amore” is an original project that allows us to bring the beauty and richness of opera to the world through the network of Italian Cultural Institutes – states Marco Maria Cerbo, Head of the Unit for Coordination of Italian Cultural Institutes. “We conceived it with an international audience in mind, for spectators who know little about opera or who wish to deepen their understanding of its history and mechanics. We are proud of this collaboration with the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, which enables us to promote Italian culture abroad with an initiative that has a strong scenic, cognitive, and emotional impact”.

The direction is by Francesco Micheli, the music is by Federico Gon, the libretto and dramaturgy are by Alberto Mattioli, and the scenery and costumes are designed by Chiara Taiocchi.
