Presentazione del libro “Augusto Rosso. Diplomatico italiano del Novecento”

On Monday 17 March at 4 p.m. in the Aldo Moro Room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the book Augusto Rosso. Diplomatico italiano del Novecento (Augusto Rosso. Italian Diplomat of the 20th century’), written by journalist Giampaolo Negro, will be presented. The presentation to the public of books on historical-diplomatic subjects in the prestigious setting of the Foreign Ministry provides an opportunity to enhance the documentary resources of the Library and Historical Diplomatic Archives, which are available to scholars and researchers.

Augusto Rosso was a leading diplomat in the period between the two World Wars, when he held important posts at the Representation to the League of Nations in Geneva and later at the Embassies in Washington (1933-1936) and Moscow (1936-1941). In 1943, following the fall of Mussolini, he was briefly appointed Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry by the Badoglio government, more than 15 years after this position had been abolished in 1927. Despite his refusal to collaborate with the Italian Social Republic (RSI), he was anyway forced to retire after the end of the war following the decisions of the Central Commission for Purges, and was reinstated in service only years later. The book, published by the Centro Studi Piemontesi and realised also thanks to the support of the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Vercelli, is based on copious archival documentation, including papers held in the Foreign Ministry’s Historical Diplomatic Archives.
